Meet Ammielle Wambo Becker, an extraordinary 18-year-old from Brampton, Ontario, who has recently achieved something remarkable. She has been awarded the highly prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship, an incredible $120,000 scholarship that will enable her to study systems design engineering at the esteemed University of Waterloo. This scholarship recognizes exceptional students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), and Ammielle is one of the fortunate recipients!

Ammielle’s aspirations are truly inspiring. She dreams of becoming an entrepreneur and creating innovative products that can make a positive difference in people’s lives, combining her passions for biology and engineering. Out of more than 1,400 students, Ammielle was chosen as the recipient, with her high school nominating her for this prestigious award. Each year, around 100 scholarships like this are granted to students to study at one of 20 universities.
This incredible scholarship will open doors for Ammielle, allowing her to join various clubs and organizations such as the National Society of Black Engineers, Women in Engineering, UW Startups, and the Women’s Centre. These opportunities will provide her with invaluable experiences and help her grow both personally and professionally.

In addition to her exceptional academic achievements, Ammielle has led a diverse and exciting life. She has been a swimming instructor, a freelance writer, and a teen advisor for Girl Up. She also took charge of her school’s newspaper club, organized a regional STEM conference for elementary school students, won multiple hackathons, and completed two internships. Her accomplishments are truly impressive!
Vivek Goel, the president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo, expressed his enthusiasm for this year’s Schulich Leader scholars, recognizing them as some of the brightest young minds in STEM. Among the other scholarship recipients are Serewaya Latif, who will pursue engineering at the University of Toronto, and Maxwell Nganyadi, who will embark on a science career at the University of Alberta. It is truly inspiring to witness such talented individuals positively impacting society.
